Inclusivity in Sport
A programme with Arsenal in the Community, Kick It Out and Kooth promoting racial and religious tolerance and diverse participation in sport, launched after the online racist abuse that followed the Euro 2020 final.
The Euro 2020 final was followed by a concerning amount of online racist abuse directed at England players. In response, Faiths Forum for London, in partnership with Arsenal in the Community, Kick It Out and Kooth, launched a programme to promote racial and religious tolerance and diverse participation in sport.
The programme encourages young people from faith schools and religious backgrounds to get involved in football.
Background: from 2013 to 2020, the rate of hate crime committed nationally rose by 63%, and 45% of Islington residents are obese or overweight.
Aims
- To promote understanding of faith backgrounds in sport.
- To raise awareness of the lack of female representation in sports such as football.
What happens
The project is a day of sporting activities for girls aged 13 to 16, hosted by Arsenal in the Community. It includes:
- A football session for girls aged 13 to 16
- A stadium tour of the Emirates, Arsenal F.C.’s home ground
- An online hate workshop on how to handle specific types of abuse, and how to reduce such abuse through education
