Rama Navami Fact Sheet

What is Rama Navami?

Rama Navami is a Hindu festival celebrating the birthday of Lord Rama. The festival is a part of Vasanta Navaratri, a ten-day long Hindu spring festival.

What does Rama Navami mean?

Rama is the name of the seventh avatar of the God Vishnu. Navami is the ninth day (tithi) of the fortnight (paksha) in the Hindu lunar calendar.

When is it celebrated?

Rama Navami occurs on the ninth day of Chaitra. Chaitra is the first month of the year in the Hindu Calendar, which usually begins in March or April of the Gregorian Calendar. In 2019, Rama Navami is celebrated on Sunday, 14th April.

What is the religious significance?

The story of the life of Rama is described in the Ramayana, one of the two major ancient Indian Sanskrit epics, which form part of the Hindu scripture. In this text, Rama begins a quest to rescue the princess Sita from the clutches of Ravana, the evil king of Lanka in which Sita is exiled. Following a successful conquest with the help of an army of monkeys, Sita is restored to Rama, marking the start of a golden age for all mankind.

How is it celebrated?

Devotees usually begin their celebrations with fasting, which is broken at the end of daylight hours with a lavish feast in honour of Rama. During the day, the story of Ramayana is recited, and accompanied with Puja, a prayer ritual of devotional worship. Special commemorative celebrations are held in those cities which are referenced in the Ramayana story, such as Ayodhya.

How is Rama Navami celebrated in the UK?

Rama Navami is celebrated in Hindu temples across the U.K, such as at the Radha-Krishna Temple in central London, and is marked by fasting, feasting, prayer and classes on the Ramayana story.
