Faiths Forum for London are deeply saddened and shocked to hear the news of the death of Sir David MP. Sir David will be remembered amongst fellow MPs and his constituents in Southend West for his diligence and enthusiasm, as well his dedication to the Roman Catholic community, of which he was a member. It is a sad day for our society that an elected official was murdered whilst upholding his duty as a public official and serving his community.
It is a great travesty that two Members of Parliament have been murdered within the space of five years, amongst a prominent rise in death threats and online abuse towards MPs. No matter their political beliefs, no elected official deserves to feel unsafe in any capacity. Such attacks on our elected representatives are attacks on our democratic society.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Sir David’s colleagues, family and loved ones at this difficult time. We also pray for the safety and wellbeing of other elected officials across the UK, who will be united in sadness, fear and shock at this senseless act of violence.
