What is Easter?

Easter is a Christian festival celebrating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

What does Easter mean?

The etymology of the term Easter it not completely clear. The most common interpretation of the meaning of the term is that it originates from the name of an Old English goddess of the dawn Ēostre.

When is it celebrated?

Easter Sunday falls between 22 March and 25 April, on the Sunday following the astronomical full moon during that time. It follows Holy Week, during which Christians commemorate the Passion of Jesus, which describes his crucifixion, death and resurrection.

What is the religious significance?

The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of the Christian faith. For Christians it confirms Jesus as the all-powerful son of God and represents the salvation of the world from sin achieved through the suffering and death of Jesus.

How is it celebrated?

On the night before Easter Sunday, Christians attend an Easter Vigil service at which candles and water are used as symbols to accompany Old and New Testament readings. Easter Sunday marks the end of Lent, the 40-day fasting and sacrifice of luxury items, allowing Christians to feast on this day to celebrate the resurrection.

How is Easter Sunday celebrated in the UK?

Easter Monday, the day after Easter Sunday, is a bank holiday in the UK. People decorate and/or eat Easter eggs, symbolizing the empty tomb in which the body of Jesus was buried before he was resurrected.

“Happy Easter” is a common greeting between Christians on Easter Sunday. At the Sunday service the priest or minister may issue blessings to the congregation, such as:

 

  • May almighty God bless you on this solemn feast of Easter, and may he protect you against all sin.
  • Through the resurrection of his Son, God has granted us healing. May he fulfill his promises, and bless you with eternal life.
  • You have mourned for Christ’s sufferings; now you celebrate the joy of his resurrection. May you come with joy to the feast which lasts forever.
